Teriparatide in Fracture Non-Unions

چکیده
BACKGROUND The use of teriparatide in the management of fracture disorders is poorly documented. This study aims to show that teriparatide administration may improve the healing process in patients with nonunions after open fixation of traumatic fractures of the lower limb. METHODS Four patients received Teriparatide for management of non-unions after open fixation of traumatic fractures of the lower limb. RESULTS Teriparatide administration resulted in adequate bone callus over the site of nonunion in all the patients, and clinical and radiographic evidence of sound union. CONCLUSIONS The efficacy of teriparatide in delayed or non unions is still unclear. It may induce an angiogenetic response which counteracts the features responsible for development of non-union. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Level IV, therapeutic case series.

Teriparatide anabolic therapy as potential treatment of type II dens non-union fractures
Odontoid fractures account for 5% to 15% of all cervical spine injuries and 1% to 2% of all spine fractures. Type II fractures are the most common fracture pattern in elderly patients. Treatment (rigid and non-rigid immobilization, anterior screw fixation of the odontoid and posterior C1-C2 fusion) remains controversial and represents a unique challenge for the treating surgeon. The aims of tre...

Although most fractures heal, critical defects in bone fail due to aberrant differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells towards fibrosis rather than osteogenesis. While conventional bioengineering solutions to this problem have focused on enhancing angiogenesis, which is required for bone formation, recent studies have shown that fibrotic non-unions are associated with arteriogenesis in the cente...

In surgical treatment for atypical femoral fractures (AFFs), reconstruction nail fixation is recommended for both complete and incomplete fractures. Although it has been reported that AFF is affected by many factors, The ASBMR Task Force 2013 Revised Case Definition of AFFs states that a curved femur is often seen in Asian patients. It is sometimes difficult to insert a nail into a femur in inc...
متن کاملPeri-prosthetic humeral non-union: Where biology meets bio-mechanic. A case report
INTRODUCTION The worldwide incidence of traumatic fractures has been growing over the last years due to the progressive aging of the population. Today, the increase of arthroplasty procedures in orthopaedic surgery is related to a high rate of peri-prosthetic fractures. Healing of the fracture is a multifactorial metabolic process; if these factors are impaired, healing process could be interru...
